Matthew 6:19-20 “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal”
After witnessing the massive panic buying that has been happening around Melbourne for the last couple of weeks. I have been shocked by the way that people are treating others, but in that have found rays of light.
On Friday, we lined up outside a rather large warehouse shopping centre called Costco. They do everything in bulk, and it’s never small. We got there at 9:30am, we witnessed that people had been waiting in line since 7am. The doors opened at 9:45am, and the line progressed into the shop. We were about 300 people from the front at least, but what I couldn’t believe was how many people would run and push to get in line first. Knocking others out of their way, parking on the road to let passengers out so that they could get in line before others. One lady hurried past another, but in her haste, she never noticed that the line end was just there and not to where she assumed it was. The look of disappointment that they would have to wait clearly showing. We were blessed to casually walk in, line up for a pack of toilet paper, a box of tissues and hand wash and then we walked out.
Many grabbed two or three packets of toilet paper and let’s remember Costco does it big, so they were huge packs of 48 roll packets. I had to smile when you saw them being denied more than 1 packet, and the extra packets then being shared to others that had missed out. But what suddenly hit me was that these people didn’t have the peace of God in their heart. They were trying to store up their riches on earth and living in fear. There was fear and panic everywhere. But then you saw it, a ray of light here or there.
One mother was so distressed over being pushed and manhandled, all she wanted was some milk and eggs to go with the toilet paper. I stepped back and allowed her to make her way through, why not. “Those that are first, shall be last, and those that are last shall be first” Some people even took time to chat or in our case show us where to find the bacon.
But I kept hearing that voice, let your light shine in the darkness. I read somewhere that the teachers, paramedics, nurses & others working in those fields just had no chance of getting the basics. In our case, how could a teacher wait in line for toilet paper if they were teaching our children. God showed me, and we made a thank you care package, of course toilet paper included. They were so touched by the gesture, one teacher had elderly grandparents that couldn’t get toilet paper anywhere and were too scared to go out to get some. That broke my heart, that those that had worked so hard for us to have the lifestyle that we have now, being unable to get everyday items.
It is seeing the Panic, the fear that people are rushing to store their worldly possessions/riches and not showing love for their neighbours. They are out to look after number one. How many of us can say we have asked our neighbours if they need help, have they enough food, or of course toilet paper? why aren’t we going to the churches and dropping off a few rolls. If we all took the time to drop off a few rolls, then those that were unable to make it to the shops could always count on the church.
Last week has been very crazy, the amount of times that I have had things happen. God has always been one step ahead. So today, walking back to the car from school with the kids, branch falls right in front of us with such force it snaps. That was close, but thankfully Emily was taking a little longer to walk today. As we drove to Joey Scouts, a car reversing from a driveway didn’t stop and almost t-boned the car. My husband had another vehicle come head on at us while driving to an appointment. It is like something is trying to steal our peace.
Are we going to let the enemy steal our peace, or are we going to be a light to the world surrounded in fear and panic? Lets chose to be a light, lets chose to be God’s light in the world. Lets chose to be how God intended the church to be and share that light with others, lets light the world/country/neighbourhood with his love, his peace and his faith. I am going to let my light shine
This Little Light Of Mine, I’m gonna let it shine, This Little Light Of Mine, I’m gonna let it shine, This Little Light Of Mine, Yes, I’m gonna let it shine, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
The light that shines is the light of love, Lights the darkness from above, It shines on you and it shines on me, And it shows what the light of love can do.
I’m gonna shine my light both far and near, I’m gonna shine mine light bright and clear, Where there’s a dark corner in this land, I’m gonna let my little light shine.
On Monday he gave me the gift of love, Tuesday peace came from above, Wednesday he told me to have more faith, And on Thursday he brought me the gift of grace. And then on Friday he told me “Watch and pray”, And then on Saturday what to say, On Sunday he gave me the power divine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
